South Boston
Okay, we’ll admit it: South Boston isn’t the first neighborhood that comes to mind when we think of beauty. Sure, the area’s become more upscale, but we still thought we’d hit almost any other ’hood before heading here. Well, Southie’s surprised us again. Since Spa Christine (699 East Broadway, South Boston, 617.269.0019) opened in November, the full-service day spa has brought some style and a serious array of products to the neighborhood. While the back of the building and the second floor are occupied by treatment rooms, the front features a boutique filled with fantastic brands: Bumble & Bumble, Aromatherapy, June Jacobs, and Pevonia Botanica, to name a few. We’re especially taken with the supersized Claus Porto soap ($14) in a selection of fantastic scents. And to get fully into the local vibe (the new vibe, that is), stop by Shag (840 Summer Street, South Boston, 617.268.2500) for one of their signature rock-star cuts. Decidedly un–Newbury Street, the salon focuses on funky asymmetrical styles and bold colors. The looks, like Shag’s bearded, hog-riding owner, are unconventional. Take a chance on them, though, and you may just emerge a new person.
